Postmortem + v1.01

Hey hey! I'm Ragenade, the one and only member of Gameface Studios currently. Maybe that'll change. Who knows.

I recently just released a game called "IT'S SPREADING!" which was developed for the 14th Pirate Software jam, but I messed up my submission and uploaded the wrong exports that didn't work. So it just turned into a game for me. Cool.

I just launched an update, but I also wanted to just talk about this project a bit.

V.1.01

This version just includes general fixes, like how the patient would randomly disappear after treatment but still be talking to you. Also, for those playing on the downloaded version, things have changed a bit:

It's now a zip for the purpose of the PCK. Maybe I didn't need to do this, but some things would not work correctly if I didn't.

SAVE FILES WORK NOW - the game saves during certain things, to both actually act as save data so you can pick up near where you left off, but save files also function for the purpose of some things that happen during endings and after endings.

Speaking of which, I should probably address something about the endings...

(SPOILERS) ARE THE ENDINGS BROKEN?

Not that I know of. Something could be broken, but I haven't found anything.

This section refers to endings 1 and 2, where after getting those endings and attempting to replay the game, the game just closes in the downloadable version. Something similar happens in the browser version, where when you get endings 1 and 2 and attempt to replay, the game doesn't work.

This is intentional.

You literally got the worst endings, you evil little person.

Endings 1 and 2 are meant to be the worst endings for you and the patient... kinda. The normal ending is actually pretty bad for the patient, though.

The game closing upon pressing the green button after getting these endings is intentional because I want you to live with your mistakes OR find the save file and delete it (this won't harm the game, it'll just delete your save data and reset your game). It should be in %appdata% somewhere. I'm not entirely sure where, though.

(but, if there IS any actual bugs with the endings, let me know)

(also the "normal ending" is the one with the credits - i forgot to add an ending screen there that tells you the ending so that's my fault oops)

Enough of spoilers, let's talk about the process behind this game & the philosophy moving forward!

POSTMORTEM

I sure hope next time there's a Pirate Software jam, I don't upload the wrong exports!

This is my second game I've ever finished, and I put a lot of work into it. 2 weeks later, and I have something I'm pretty proud of!

I think there's a good amount of detail here - there's well over 100 lines of dialogue, multiple paths, and 5 different endings. I think that's pretty cool for 2 weeks.

That being said, I wish I could've done just a bit more. More SFX, more fixes, and I also wish I didn't mess up my submission.

I'm bummed out about the whole submission thing, but oh well, we move forward.

So, over the next few days, I'm gonna try to do the things I wanted. Expect the Sound Effects update tomorrow or something (wow, biggest update in the history of gaming)

Moving forward, I'm gonna try to do similar things to what I did with this project - I really like the choice-based systems, so expect to see more of that from me, I guess.

And who knows? Maybe this will become a full game someday...

ADVICE

My advice to upcoming game devs is to literally just do it.

That may seem corny, but I'm being honest.
The best thing you can do is to just fire up an engine, look up "how do I make a character move in ______", and do it.

But for some extra motivation, join a game jam. It may seem scary, but doing 2 jams now is the sole reason why I now know how to somewhat make games.

So just do it.

Thanks for reading! Check out "It's Spreading!" if you haven't and want a weird, choice-based body horror game!
